A Patient’s Guide to Kybella

Jul 27, 2017

Until recently, individuals who were bothered by the appearance of a double chin either lived with it or underwent surgery. Now that the FDA has approved Kybella as a nonsurgical treatment for submental fullness, invasive procedures are no longer necessary to achieve a sleek silhouette under the chin. Your dermatologist can administer it right in the office, and it only takes about a half-hour.

Candidates

Kybella has undergone rigorous FDA testing protocols, and has been found safe for patients. However, you’ll still need to discuss your medical history with your dermatologist. Discuss whether you’ve had or plan to have medical or cosmetic treatments in the face and neck area. Disclose whether you have any medical conditions that affect this area, and whether any of the following apply to you:

  • Trouble swallowing
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Allergies

Process

Kybella is made from a synthetic version of a substance that naturally occurs in the body. This substance helps the body break down and absorb fat. Your dermatologist will inject this substance into the submental fat under your chin, where it breaks down the fat cells and decreases the appearance of a double chin.

Treatment

During your first appointment, the dermatologist will assess your cosmetic concerns and develop a treatment plan that’s right for you. You may have multiple treatment sessions, which are spaced at least one month apart. Patients do not receive more than six treatments with Kybella. At each appointment, your provider will carefully inject Kybella into strategic locations in the submental fat.

Post-Treatment

There is no recovery time needed. You can get your Kybella injections on your lunch break and immediately return to your usual activities. The most common side effects are temporary discomfort, redness, swelling, bruising, areas of hardness, and numbness. These side effects usually go away by themselves.

Kybella is one of the many safe and effective cosmetic treatments we offer here at Arlington Dermatology. If you live near the Arlington Heights area, come in and talk with a dermatologist about your cosmetic concerns. Call [company-phone id=1].
