Essential Nutrition for Healthy Skin

Oct 2, 2012

While genetics definitely play a role in the condition of your skin, any dermatologist will tell you that the things you do on a regular basis, including the foods you eat, play a significant role in the look and integrity of your skin. Learn how to improve the health of your skin with these handy nutrition tips.

Consume More Antioxidants

Antioxidants are found in many foods and help fight the premature aging process by destroying the free radicals responsible for causing DNA damage to our skin cells. Foods that are rich in antioxidants include blueberries, strawberries, cranberries, artichokes, pomegranates, red grapes, beans, carrots, apples, potatoes, and even dark chocolate.

Increase Retinoid Consumption

Retinoids, or vitamin A derivatives, have been shown to provide a number of benefits, such as unclogging your pores, clearing up acne, reducing the look of fine lines, and even lightening the color of freckles and brown spots. Consider incorporating more retinoids into your diet by consuming more liver, meat, whole milk, and eggs.

Stock Up on Omega-3’s

Omega-3 fatty acids help improve the elasticity of your skin by boosting your body’s natural collagen production, ultimately improving the texture of your skin. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in walnuts, flaxseed oil, canola oil, spinach and several types of fish—including salmon, halibut, albacore, trout, sardines, catfish, and cod.

Drink Plenty of Water

Dehydrated or dry skin makes fine lines and wrinkles appear deeper. You can help to reduce the signs of aging by drinking at least eight eight-ounce glasses of water a day. Keeping your skin hydrated can also help make your skin softer.
