What are Laser & Cosmetic Procedures For?
As we age, our skin naturally loses collagen, elasticity, and volume. These effects can be accelerated or exacerbated after years of sun exposure, which can also cause pigmentation changes and precancerous lesions. Before long, you might begin to notice wrinkles, sagging skin, age spots, and other unwanted cosmetic features.
Who is a Good Candidate for Laser & Cosmetic Procedures?
Laser and cosmetic dermatology treatments can benefit patients who are looking to:
- Smooth out fine lines and wrinkles
- Tighten sagging or loose skin
- Restore lost facial volume
- Reduce the appearance of dark spots and discoloration
- Improve skin texture and pore size
- Minimize acne scars
- Fade unwanted tattoos
- Treat vascular lesions like spider veins
- Refresh dull, tired-looking skin
In general, patients in good health who are bothered by age-related changes in their appearance, as well as any undesirable skin/vascular conditions, can get excellent results from these non-invasive cosmetic treatments. Our dermatology team can determine if you are a good candidate based on your health history and aesthetic goals.
What Laser & Cosmetic Procedures are Available at Arlington Dermatology?
Currently, Arlington Dermatology offers the following laser and cosmetic procedures:
BOTOX® Cosmetic (OnabotulinumtoxinA)
BOTOX® Cosmetic is an FDA approved treatment for moderate to severe frown lines, as well as severe underarm sweating. Men and women of all ages and ethnicities can elect to receive Botox treatments as a quick and minimally invasive procedure. Botox causes the muscles to relax, without compromising your freedom of expression; so patients can smile and laugh without the lines. Botox treatments used to control severe underarm sweating have helped patients live more productive lives and boost their self-confidence. By blocking the chemical signals that stimulate sweat glands, Botox restricts the amount of sweat that is produced. Patients notice a significant reduction in sweating within four weeks of the first treatment.
The Spectrum Laser
The Spectrum Laser holds the title of being the only multi-platform workstation with 4 lasers and Intense Pulsed Light. Those 4 lasers are called 810-Diode, Erbium YAG, Q-Switched YAG/KTP, and the Long Pulsed YAG. The 810-Diode is used for hair removal and comes with a big spot size, contact cooling, and a hertz rate of up to 10 pulses per second. Erbium YAG produces tremendous skin improvement with less recovery time. The Erbium skin resurfacing process removes fine lines and wrinkles across the body. Dermatologists use the Q-Switched YAG/KTP laser to remove tattoos. An assortment of tattoo pigments are eliminated because of its dual wavelengths. Long Pulsed YAG lasers work to destroy blood vessels with heat, which makes them collapse. Lastly, the Intense Pulsed Light hosts 4 filters used in procedures such as hair reduction, acne reduction, and the elimination of vascular and pigmented lesions.
DermaPen®
DermaPen® is a fractional micro-needling device that works to tighten, lift and rejuvenate the skin. It’s effective in reducing fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, surgical and acne scars. DermaPen is safe for any skin type and has a short treatment time and minimal discomfort with virtually no downtime. Multiple treatments are recommended for optimal results.
V-Beam Pulsed Dye Laser
Pulsed dye laser treatments eliminate benign vascular lesions that include rosacea, facial and leg veins, scars, psoriasis, red birthmarks, port-wine stains, angiomas, hemangiomas, Poikiloderma, venous lakes, stretch marks and warts. The laser delivers an intense but gentle burst of yellow light to the skin. The light is specifically absorbed by the blood vessels in the dermis. These blood vessels are coagulated and then reabsorbed by the body during the natural healing process. Multiple treatments may be needed depending on the severity of the lesion.
Intensive Pulsed Light (IPL)
Intensive Pulsed Light treatment can help to correct variety of benign skin conditions such as facial skin imperfections, the signs of photo-aging, birthmarks, facial redness, unwanted hair, unsightly small veins, and other blemishes by utilizing specific wavelengths of light. This gentle treatment uses broad spectrum light to treat face, chest, neck and hands to improve the appearance of photo aged skin. When the broad spectrum light penetrates the tissue that is being treated, the light is changed to heat energy as it reaches the level of the collagen beneath the skin surface, and that is when the body’s natural processes then remove the unwanted tissue giving the skin more of a youthful appearance.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
This therapy is a 2-step treatment process: Levulan Kerastick Topical Solution 20% plus BLU-U Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy Illuminator is specifically formulated for few or multiple actinic keratosis of scalp or face. Actinic keratoses (AKs) are rough-textured, dry, scaly patches on the skin that can lead to skin cancer. They have potential to progress to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), which is the second most common form of skin cancer. Levulan Kerastick Topical Solution is applied to the AK area, where AK cells absorb the solution which makes the cells extremely sensitive to the light. When AK cells are exposed to the BLU-U Blue Light Illuminator, it results in the destruction of the AK cells. After the treatment is complete, patients should avoid exposure to sunlight or bright indoor light for at least hours after the application.
Pharos Excimer Laser Therapy Treatment
The Pharos EX-308 excimer laser is used to treat primarily psoriasis, as well as vitiligo. This laser produces a highly effective, safe and painless therapy by delivering a targeted, super narrow UVB band to affected areas, resulting in effective and quick improvement without the worry of harmful side effects. This treatment is performed two times per week on the affected area. Most patients begin to notice progress in their psoriasis within 3 or 4 treatments (individual results may vary). It is typically covered by major insurances, where on average your costs will be your standard co-pay or deductible costs after the prior authorization is completed.
Light Therapy Treatment
Light treatment therapy is the exposure to specific wavelengths of light using polychromatic polarized light for a specific amount of time. It is mostly done with narrow band UVB wavelength as well as UVA light waves in the light box. It is ideal to treat psoriasis, vitiligo and acne vulgaris to help reduce inflammatory responses. This treatment is performed two to three times per week, where the exposure time is very short. Most patients notice progress in their condition within 4 to 6 treatments (individual results may vary). It is typically covered by major insurances, where on average your costs will be your standard co-pay or deductible costs after the prior authorization is completed if needed.
Are Laser & Cosmetic Procedures Covered by Insurance?
Laser and cosmetic dermatology treatments prescribed to treat certain medical skin conditions may be covered by insurance. Examples include laser therapy for psoriasis and eczema, laser removal of precancerous lesions, and pulsed-dye laser for port wine stain birthmarks. During your consultation, we will determine if laser or cosmetic procedures are medically necessary for your condition. If so, we can submit documentation to your insurance provider requesting prior authorization. If approved, your treatments may be fully or partially covered.
However, most elective cosmetic procedures like Botox®, microneedling, laser skin resurfacing, and others performed solely to improve appearance are usually not covered by insurance. These are considered aesthetic treatments rather than medically necessary care. Patients can expect to pay out-of-pocket for the full cost of these elective cosmetic treatments.
