Different Types of Carcinoma

Feb 2, 2016

Carcinoma is a serious medical condition that requires skin cancer treatment. Carcinoma is a specific kind of cancer that starts in cells that make up the skin or the tissue lining organs like the liver or kidneys. Cancers on the skin can be entirely treatable; however, you must see a dermatologist as soon as possible for the best prognosis. Continue reading to learn more about three different kinds of carcinoma, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and renal cell carcinoma.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

A dermatologist most commonly treats basal cell carcinoma, as it is the most frequently diagnosed form of skin cancer worldwide. Most cases of BCC are thought to be caused by sun exposure. BCC does not metastasize but instead spreads to the surrounding tissues. BCC usually appears as a small growth with a pearly color. Available skin cancer treatment for BCC includes excision, laser surgery, topical therapy, cryosurgery, and more.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma is also commonly diagnosed by a dermatologist; however, this form of cancer appears as a tumor in the outer layer of skin. Middle-aged and elderly patients are more likely to be affected, especially individuals with fair complexions. Unlike melanoma, SCC does not commonly spread to other areas of the body. SCC usually appears as small red growths or a crusted or scaly area.

Renal Cell Carcinoma

Renal cell carcinoma does not appear on the skin at all. The common name for this carcinoma is kidney cancer. Most people who develop kidney cancer are between 50 and 70 years old. RCC usually starts as one tumor on a single kidney but can appear as multiple tumors on both kidneys.
