10 Skin Care Secrets for Healthier Skin
At Arlington Dermatology, we are committed to helping you keep your skin young and healthy! Here are 10 skin care secrets that will surprise you!
1. Wear your sunscreen every day!
From age 6 months up, sunscreen should be worn daily. Broad-spectrum protection with an SPF of 30 or higher that is also water resistant can slow down the harmful effects of the sunlight that cause aging. Additionally, sunscreen is a key component in skin cancer prevention.
2. Make an appointment for skin cancer screening!
An estimated one in five Americans will have skin cancer in their lifetime.
Self-checks are a great way to catch concerning spots early. Use a full-length mirror to check all areas of your body: front and back, left and right, arms raised, underarms, forearms and palms, legs, toes and soles of your feet. Use a hand mirror to also examine your neck and scalp- even part your hair and look through your scalp closely. Don’t forget to also check your back and bottom. If you see that any spots have changed, make an appointment with a dermatologist and get checked.
3. Look tan without the tan!
Use a self-tanner to achieve the look of being tan without the damaging rays of becoming tan.
4. Don’t smoke!
Smoking has many negative side effects, so it is no surprise that smoking is a poor choice that would perpetuate many skin diseases, including psoriasis.
5. Use the proper product to meet your skins’ actual needs.
Knowing the type of skin that you have will help you match cleansers, lotions, and other products with the needs that your type of skin has. Taking proper care of your skin will help it stay smooth the longest!!
6. Be gentle!
No matter what you’ve been doing, there is no race or prize for finishing a face wash first or doing so with the most vigorous actions! Be gentle and use luke-warm water, apply a mild cleanser, use fingertips to wash in a circular motion, rinse, and pat dry.
7. Wash at the right times!
Acne is caused by bacteria, so it is important to wash your face 3 or more times a day: when you wake up, before going to bed, and after sweating.
8. Be kind to your skin!
Symptoms of neither sweat nor flare ups are made happier by scrubbing vigorously! Be sure to stay calm so that your skin does not become more irritated and cause certain conditions (like acne) to worsen.
9. Self-care is better than stress!
Stress can cause certain diseases (i.e. psoriasis) and outbreaks (i.e., acne) to increase. Find ways to channel that negative, stressful energy through self-care. More than just your skin will be grateful!
10. See a dermatologist!
Dermatologists are the experts in skin care. Whether you are looking for a base line to know that you are staying healthy or looking for someone to help you find the best solution for a situation, there is a doctor eagerly waiting to give you the help that you need!
