Common Skin Conditions that Dermatologists Can Treat

Jun 16, 2011

The skin is a remarkable organ. It serves as a barrier, protecting the body from damage and disease. Its blood vessels act as a coolant system, dilating to let moving blood cool off and constricting to keep heat in. The skin has so many functions that an entire branch of medicine – dermatology – is dedicated to treating only conditions related to the skin. But sometimes the skin develops conditions which make it less functional or aesthetically appealing. Here are some examples of conditions a dermatologist is able to treat:

  • Acne: Acne, while not a health concern, can be distressing to those who suffer from it. Acne typically manifests as scaly red skin characterized by the eruption of blackheads or whiteheads.
  • Actinic keratosis: Thick, dry bumps caused by sun damage, actinic keratosis can lead to cancer if left untreated.
  • Eczema: Eczema is a chronic disorder where itchy rashes and blisters form on the skin, which can be extremely uncomfortable.
  • Melanoma: A serious form of skin cancer where mutated cells grow rapidly and out of control. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer.
  • Psoriasis: Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease appearing as large scaly patches of red or white skin.
  • Rosacea: A condition where tiny blood vessels in the face become inflamed, causing redness. Rosacea is often called “gin blossoms,” although it is not necessarily connected to alcohol consumption.
  • Warts: These small, rough growths are caused by viral infection, and can be contagious and recurrent.

Some skin conditions and cancers can be completely cured, while others can be managed with treatment to minimize symptoms and reduce the frequency and intensity of outbreaks.
